Nutty lockets: pistachio

April 2020
Museum of Arts and Design, New York City

Make this tiny, but fashionable wearable artwork using just a piece of twist tie, an empty pistachio shell, bits of paper and some nail polish. Add a photo of yourself inside. What better way to show your loved one what they mean to you? It is practical, and flattens to fit inside an envelope for easy shipping and handling.

The short version…

A piece of wire, or wire cut from a twist tie, is formed into a loop with a tail. The tails are attached to the interior of a pistachio shell with a layer of paper bits and glue.

Nail polish and/or black permanent marker is used to decorate the shell.

A photo can also be added inside. Attach with glue, then seal with clear nail polish.

A jump ring connects the two halves of the locket together. This can be made from a covered paper clip or piece of wire.
